Article Westie:

“Price of hundreds of euros for a westie puppy ??? Oh, huge, this is a theft !!!” …or maybe not?!

Who hasn’t heard or thought of these words .. And yet when it comes to buying a quality westie dog, the numbers shouldn’t terrify anyone. Theft? Speculate? Do I profit from Westie puppies? This is how many people tend to think of looking for a westie for sale when they come to a serious breeder. Precisely because mestizos are being sold everywhere at very low prices under the name of Westie puppies.

The truth is that the world that has nothing to do with kennology, does not know or understand why a Westie puppy costs, what is included in that price and what are the real costs that a serious breeder must bear. I will try in the following lines to explain the factors that contribute to the formation of the price of a puppy. Maybe this way you will be able to understand how things are in a serious kennel, with a responsible breeder (breeders and puppy traders belong to another category).

1. THE SELECTION IS PAID

In order for us to have several hundred dog breeds today, many people have had to put in the effort, time and money to maintain, improve and promote puppy breeds. If there were no serious breeders to control the reproduction of quality canine specimens, we would have a multitude of combinations of breeds = mestizos, resulting from mating by ear and accidental.

Testing the character of westie breeders and especially their health, health tests, etc. to make sure they don’t have genetically transmitted problems, it’s priced.

Participating in canine beauty shows, where competent people – referees – determine how well a westie dog fits in standard, also has a high price.

2. THE BEAUTY OF THE DOG WESTIE IS PAID, ITS FRAMEWORK IN THE STANDARD, speaking of puppys, it is fair to say its potential.

What is the standard of a race? The standard of a breed is a set of rules regarding appearance, movement and temperament. The standard of a breed gives us an overview of what the ideal dog of that breed should look like. Copies of the same breed are not the same, they are not like a picture taken by the printer in thousands of children. The variations are multiple and can be found in: fur color, fur length, head shape, ear shape and grip, tail shape and grip, height at the withers, length, etc. There are also variations in the dog’s gait and temperament. The better the Westie dog meets the standard, the higher the qualifications in the exhibitions. The more potentially a Westie puppy is considered, the higher the price will be than other nest nests.

This does not mean, however, that all puppies with pedigree will be champions, or that from champion parents all puppies will be identical to their parents. Genetics is never safe.

In a nest there can also be PET QUALITY puppies. What this means? A pet quality westie puppy has the same temperament, the same look as the other nest brothers considered with show potential. But it has certain “defects”, deviations from the standard, which are not visible to the naked eye. What deviations are we talking about: soft fur, westie dog smaller or bigger by a few cm, incorrect bite, certain proportions, a certain angle between 2 bones other than ideal, incomplete pigment, non-descent in the scrotum of a testicle (male westie) etc. Pet quality dogs will never be used for breeding.

Many people are frightened when they hear of a “pet quality” dog, asking questions about the dog’s health, major defects that would have a negative impact on the dog’s quality of life. A pet dog purchased from a serious breeder offers you the security of belonging to the breed (demonstrable only by pedigree), the health of the parents and the puppy, correct temperament, balanced, correct care. A pet quality westie puppy will be priced lower than a puppy with show potential.

3. A portion of a breeder’s expenses is paid to obtain a westie puppy, which is not a small number and which generally includes:

a) – the acquisition of puppies that will be the breeders of the kennel. Because in Romania the Westie breed is poorly represented or the breeder wants to improve certain lines, puppies have been purchased from other countries, at prices that are often double or even triple those in Romania, plus transportation, accommodation, etc.

b) – expenses with these Westie puppies up to the optimal age for reproduction: super premium food, quality vitamins, Westie grooming products, hygiene, training, exhibitions, health tests, vaccines, etc.

c) – If the Westie male chosen for breeding is not owned by the breeder, he will have to take the female to another breeder, which involves other costs plus the cost of the actual breeding.

d) – for the gestation period, the female needs extra care, special food that is much more expensive than the adult one, ultrasound, vitamins, etc. For calving, veterinary care may be needed, and some breeds or females may experience complications that require a cesarean section. It is often necessary to help the female, supplementing the puppies’ food with special milk powder. Then the westie puppies are passed on special beans and cans and powdered milk again to facilitate weaning. Internal deworming and vaccines. To prevent the puppy from getting sick, the vet comes home. Calculate 4-5 absorbent mats daily for at least 2 months.

All these expenses with the puppies are supported by the breeder until the puppy is at least 2-3 months old. No serious breeder will give you the puppy faster, because it is a very important stage in which the Westie puppy learns to socialize with his mother and siblings. A westie puppy sold out of the nest at 6 weeks is very likely to have temper problems when it grows up.

e) – expenses for registering Westie puppies, issuing a Certificate of Origin / Pedigree, breeding and calving declaration, etc. These statements are made at the Romanian Kennel Club.
Other issues and expenses:

A breeder spends hours a day with the property’s Westie puppies, training, education, Westie grooming, in addition to walking and playing. When you have one or two puppies, it seems simple, but when you have several puppies to take care of properly, you should know that it is not so easy. In addition, you have to make many concessions. Most breeders have a service from which they earn their living, and with the money obtained from the sale of the puppies they cover a PART OF their expenses with the dogs, and this money will go back to the westie dogs.

In dog shows, a dog can get certain qualifications and titles. No money is earned, as many believe. On the contrary, a breeder pays for the participation in that exhibition, plus expenses for transportation, accommodation, etc. Diplomas are paid. There are also rules for awarding titles. For example, in order for me to become my champion dog in Ukraine, I will have to participate in at least 4 exhibitions in Ukraine, to obtain certain qualifications in a period of time. What costs do I have? Exhibition registration fee 50 euros / dog / day, transport from a city located a few hundred km from the border, plus accommodation 1-2 nights, plus food. A minimum of 200 euros for a single day of exhibition. In addition, you cannot present the dog in the exhibition anyway. The fur needs to be groomed, maintaining the fur of a westie terrier dog in the condition of exposure costs time and money. To become a Romanian Junior Champion you only need 2 exhibitions (simpler)

In many breeds there are exhibitions with work samples for hunting dogs, commercial dogs, etc. All this costs both the exposure itself and the prior training of the dog. And all this to get the standard Westie puppies, which in addition to their physical appearance, also have the right temperament, in accordance with the purpose for which that breed was created.

Dog shows are not a simple MOFT. A serious breeder participates in these exhibitions to demonstrate the quality of the Westie puppies he has and to confirm their compliance with the breed standard. (Westie Terrier breed)

A breeder has rare nests and respects the minimum and maximum age for breeding. It will show you a history of past nests, dog pedigree, parents’ birth dates, so you can track how many nests each female had. more recently those who sell westie without pedigree call themselves WESTIE BREEDERS. It would be better to be called WESTIE FARMS.

What happens after 8 years when the female is removed from the breeding program? She is “retired” but will continue to enjoy the breeder’s attention, play with the other Westie Terrier puppies, continue to eat quality food, benefit from vet checks. In the so-called “breeders”, “kennels” the females make puppies non-stop until exhaustion, there is no superior forum (Kennel Club) to forbid this.

Conclusion: It takes time, money, effort and dedication to breed healthy, typical, standard and balanced temperament Westie puppies. Not the act itself, that Pedigree, seen as a paper, costs, but the information it actually contains, the work of selecting parents, grandparents, great-grandparents, etc. That Pedigree is the story of the western baby you want.

Getting a puppy with a pedigree is not a fad or snobbery, a puppy is not taken with a pedigree just for display in exhibitions, but for your certainty that you receive a purebred puppy with the right appearance and temperament, a balanced westie puppy. raised in good condition, a well-groomed and vaccinated / vaccinated REAL puppy.
